Meet Amal, entrepreneur, artist, and mother. Amal is a former
teacher who has been painting and exhibiting for years in
galleries throughout Baghdad, and more recently in the U.S.
She is also partner in an Internet Cafe and ejoys "serving
up the web" in addition to art.
Mrs. Alwan is active in a variety of civic causes. She is
one of the original founders of the Women's Business Center
of Baghdad (WBCB) and manages the finances for The Association
of the Family To The Care Deaf And Dumb Orphans. She's busy
traveling around town and more recently planning a trip to
the U.S. with her three children.
Her daughter, Abeera, and son
Omer are quite budding artists as well. They prepared artwork
for the National Council
of Churches - USA visit to Baghdad in 2003 and are also
considering careers in art. Amal's littlest son, Anuush, while
too young to paint, is nevertheless beginning to exhibit some
of the talents of his older siblings and mother.
Amal is married to, Safa, a civic
leader active throughout the the capitol. He plans to remain
in Baghdad while Amal and her children are touring the US
in late 2004 and early 2005.
Amal plans to visit galleries
and exhibit her artwork in New York, Chicago, and Texas while
her children will particpate in art education projects. In
addition to the art scene, Amal is very interested in meeting
with women's business groups in the U.S. so that she can learn
how to build a better WBCB on her return.
